Movie Review: The Woman in the Fifth
2 stars
Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski
Starring Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas and Joanna Kulig
Rated R
For most of its eighty three minutes, the Parisian mystery "The lady within the Fifth" offers an atmospheric depiction of lonely life within the town of Lights, enhanced by the sullen charisma of star Ethan Hawke.
Amid the leisurely-paced gloom and doom, the filmmaker plants engaging hints that we're witnessing the planet through the protagonist's fraying psyche. Subtly sinister things begin to happen - Tom begins an unconventional relationship with a good looking widow (Kristin Scott Thomas), his threatening neighbor grows additional and additional menacing and also the strange goings-on at the task begin to torture him.
But for all the buildup, for all the promise of minor-key, David Lynch-esque surrealism with a French twist, the movie offers perilously very little payoff. it is a mood piece while not structure or which means, that includes a 3rd act that is such a muddled mess you marvel why you've got bothered putting the time in to induce there.
